Loced Out is an exhibition and event that bridges old-school and new-school Memphis Rap. In the 90s, while East and West Coast hip-hop dominated, Memphis developed a distinct underground sound driven by a D.I.Y. scene of fans, DJs, rappers, and producers. Known for its eerie, grimy vibe, Memphis Rap influenced both the music and its dark, mysterious album art.
This genre's impact continues today, with artists like Beyoncé and Playboi Carti sampling it, and Three 6 Mafia becoming the first hip-hop group to win an Oscar. Modern trap music’s drum patterns also trace back to Memphis beats from the 80s and 90s.
Loced Out honors this legacy by showcasing enlarged album covers and playing the corresponding music for an immersive experience. The event also features a rare cassette release of unreleased 2016–2018 collaborations between Ray Fuego and producer Styn.
Join us on October 19th for a deep dive into Memphis Rap with live DJs, a listening session, and complimentary drinks from 16:00.
Exhibition is on show at Galerie de Schans this weekend 19 & 20 October.
