Fantastic Man: What single garment is key to your personal style?

Bonne Reijn: A workwear suit of my own invention called a BONNE SUIT. It’s a garment in which you can do whatever you want, whenever you want.

How many BONNE SUITS do you have in your wardrobe?

I have lots.

What is it specifically about the suits that you love?

The suits are directly inspired by farmers’ overalls which are made from heavy cotton so they don’t get destroyed easily. ISSEY MIYAKE’s suits are another big inspiration; they are in between a tailored suit and a pyjama. So my suits are sturdy and relaxed whilst looking tailored and sharp. Most importantly, I can put them in the washing machine and get my pasta sauce stains out.

Do you know where your attachment to these kinds of suits comes from? Is it something from your youth, or something you picked up from a specific person? When, who?

I started wearing farmers’ overalls as soon as I could walk. I used to spend my summers in Dedemsvaart with my mother and my great aunt MIEN RUYS, the landscape architect. We’d live there in her big gardens and the only time I wasn’t playing outside was when I was sleeping so I’d get dirty a lot. The overalls were the perfect solution to keeping my clothes clean.

In general, what signifies your style of dressing?

I’m constantly caught between looking like a bum and trying to look like the late PRINCE BERNHARD of the Netherlands. I’m also usually covered in sauce stains because I’m always making pasta.

Who else do you look at for style inspiration?

My mother and, later on, my foster mother are really my only inspirations for how people should dress.

Can you describe the state of your closet? Is it tidy, messy, super organised, folded, boxed, grouped by colour or season, etcetera?

It’s super messy. I lose clothing all the time. I am trying to become a balanced, organised person but I don’t think it will ever happen.

Do you pick out what you’re going to wear the night before?

I usually just have to go with whatever is cleanest.

Is there a garment that you used to dislike but ended up loving and wearing?

No, I don’t have these kind of opinions about clothing.

Have you ever made a radical change in your ‘look’? Have you ever been tempted to get rid of all your clothes and start again from scratch?

Not really. Between the ages of 12 and 18 I would only wear one outfit. I thought I was a mod so I’d only wear FRED PERRY polos and I had one pair of wide pants. I seriously only had one pair of pants. Then I suddenly discovered fashion and I started wearing RICK OWENS and DAMIR DOMA but I realised quite soon that my farmer’s body just wasn’t made for this beautiful skinny silhouette and gradually my idea for the BONNE SUITS came along.

Have you ever considered settling on a strict uniform and what would it be? Would you consider it a relief, or a loss of options?

I’ve done just that with my suits! I do consider it a loss of options, and what a relief!

What do you wear to look sexy? Do you have a pick up look?

I’ve had steady girlfriends since the tender age of 13 so I’ve never actually picked up a girl! But I love to look sexy for myself. I feel sexy in my own suits or my ISSEY MIYAKE suit.

What amazing tip for wardrobe management or maintenance can you share?

Buy a BONNE SUIT and don’t wear anything else except socks and underwear (if you are into that). Shoes are okay as well.
